Assistant Manager – Café
About the Role
As Assistant Manager, you'll support the successful day-to-day operation of a busy café, ensuring outstanding customer service, high food quality standards, and an efficient, motivated team. You'll deputise for the Café Manager when required and work closely with the Hospitality and Event Manager to deliver an exceptional customer experience while achieving operational and commercial objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the daily management of the café, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
- Lead, motivate, train, and develop the café team, including scheduling staff and providing support in the manager's absence.
- Deliver consistently high standards of customer service and food quality.
- Monitor stock levels, manage inventory, and order supplies as required.
- Handle customer feedback and resolve issues professionally and efficiently.
- Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and food safety.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and company procedures.
- Manage cash handling, POS systems, and daily reconciliations.
- Monitor sales performance, control costs, and support the achievement of financial targets.
- Assist with developing promotional activities and seasonal campaigns to increase sales.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver hospitality events and support themed activities throughout the year.
About You
You'll be an organised and proactive hospitality professional with previous supervisory or management experience in a café, restaurant, or similar hospitality environment. You'll be passionate about delivering outstanding customer experiences and confident leading a team in a busy operation.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Previous experience in a café, restaurant, or hospitality management/supervisory role.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Good organisational and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience with cash handling and POS systems.
- Basic financial awareness, including stock control and cost management.
- Food Safety Level 2 certification.
- Ability to work flexibly, including weekends, bank holidays, and varied shifts.
Desirable:
- Hospitality or business qualification.
- Barista training.
- Knowledge of HACCP.
- Experience using café management software.
Working Environment
- Busy, customer-focused hospitality environment.
- Standing for extended periods.
- Flexible shifts including mornings, evenings (up to 8pm during summer), weekends, and bank holidays.
